Accessibility The house would be difficult for people with mobility problems as the bedrooms
are all on the first floor. The Cottage
on the other hand has wide access doors, no steps, and grab handles in bathroom
and shower. All accommodation in the
Cottage is on one level.
Outside All properties enjoys its own patio area with BBQ and garden furniture, and
share a modern oval pool (Approx. 10m x 5m with Roman steps), set in a paved
patio, with steps from the front garden. We have beautiful palms, cypresses,
willows, poplars, and other specimen trees and shrubs.
Coast/Beach
The Gironde estuary is about 30 minutes away (Port Maubert) with Talmont,
Royan, St Palais sur Mer, and Vaux sur Mer around 45 minutes drive. La Rochelle
is also within 1.1/2 hours drive.
Golf
Cognac Golf Club is a Championship course located 40 minutes away with
excellent clubhouse facilities. Saintes GC is another excellent course, though
very hilly on the front nine; it has a nice restaurant and facilities, and is
about 45 minutes drive away. Royan GC is set in pine forests and is a lovely links
type course, and around 60 minutes away.
Special
interest holidays
Walking holidays, especially the Frankton Trail, the escape route taken by
Blondie Hasler and Bill Sparks, the only two of the original 'Cockleshell
Heroes' to return. The Frankton Trail runs from St Genes de Blaye, on the
Gironde, to Ruffec in the north of the Charente. The Trail passes by our
property. Over 80 other excellent walks, well marked by the CDRP, (Comité
Départemental de Randonnée Pédestre) are all around us. Times and distances
vary from 1 to 4 hours. Full details on request.
Travel
Bordeaux Airport is less than 60 minutes away,Bergerac or La Rochelle about 90
minutes, and Limoges about two hours. Channel Ports, Calais 8 hours, Caen 6
hours, Le Havre 6.5 hours, St Malo 5 hours, and if you prefer a mini-cruise in
advance, Britanny Ferries sail to Santander in Spain, which is about 6 hours
away. Transport is a must, and car hire can be arranged by the owners.
Distances
Leoville village is 2 miles, Baignes market town is 5 miles, ancient fortified
towns of Jonzac 8 miles, and Barbezieux 12 miles, Cognac 24 miles, Bordeaux 50
miles. Aubeterre sur Dronne which is reputed to be the most photographed
village in France and has an amazing underground church, is about 30 miles
away. Blaye, with ferry across to the Medoc region, with all of the beautiful
Chateaux, is around 20 miles. Saint Emilian is less than 1 hour away, and
beautiful Brantome under 2 hours.
Further
details
Various shops, restaurant/bars, bank, weekly market in town square, in Baignes.
Jonzac and Barbezieux both have a good selection of shops and restaurants.
Jonzac has a brilliant water park (Les Antilles de Jonzac) with indoor and
outdoor lagoons and beaches, wave machines and flumes, and is next door to
Casino de Jonzac which has an excellent restaurant and regular shows, outside
of the gaming areas. Visits to local distillery for Cognac and Pineau tasting
can be arranged. There are many wine cooperatives around the Bordeaux Region,
that provide free tastings, well worth a trip.
